02 · Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy

Your privacy matters. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, and your rights under applicable data-protection law (including the GDPR for EEA readers).

1. Who We Are

The data controller is Egabo Aaron, an individual publisher operating from Kampala, Uganda. Contact: aaronegabo@gmail.com.

2. Data We Collect

Newsletter subscribers

  • Email address (required to send you the newsletter).
  • Subscription date and source (to detect spam sign-ups).
  • Aggregate open and click data sent by our email provider.

Website visitors

  • Anonymised analytics (page views, referrer, country). No individual fingerprinting.
  • Technical logs (IP address, browser type) retained for a maximum of 30 days for security purposes.

3. Legal Basis for Processing

  • Consent — newsletter subscription; marketing cookies.
  • Legitimate interests — security logs; aggregate analytics.
  • Legal obligation — fraud prevention; law enforcement requests.

4. How We Use Your Data

  • To send you the weekly essay and occasional editorial announcements.
  • To improve the site and understand what topics resonate.
  • To maintain security and prevent abuse.

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell personal data. We share data only with:

  • Email infrastructure providers (e.g. Resend / Supabase) to deliver newsletters — bound by data-processing agreements.
  • Hosting providers (Vercel) for site operation.
  • Law enforcement when legally required.

6. Data Retention

  • Subscriber email addresses are retained until you unsubscribe, after which they are deleted within 30 days.
  • Security logs are deleted after 30 days.
  • Aggregate analytics data is retained indefinitely (no personal data).

7. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data; restrict or object to processing; data portability; withdraw consent at any time; and lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

To exercise any right, email aaronegabo@gmail.com. We will respond within 30 days.

8. International Transfers

Data may be processed outside your country of residence (e.g. in the United States, via Vercel). We rely on Standard Contractual Clauses and adequacy decisions where applicable.

9. Children’s Privacy

The Undercurrent is not directed at children under 13 (or 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect data from minors. If you believe we have done so, contact us immediately.

03 · Cookie Policy

Cookie Policy

This site uses a small number of browser storage mechanisms. Here is exactly what is stored and why.

1. Strictly Necessary Storage

These are set automatically and are required for the site to function. No consent is needed.

  • uc-theme (localStorage) — stores your light/dark mode preference. Expires: never (until you clear storage). No personal data.

2. Analytics

We use privacy-first, cookieless analytics that do not set persistent cookies or fingerprint individual users. If a cookie-based analytics solution is ever introduced, this policy will be updated and consent requested first.

3. Third-Party Embeds

Certain pages may embed content from third-party services (e.g. YouTube, Twitter/X). These services may set their own cookies. We recommend reviewing their respective cookie policies.

4. Managing Cookies

You can clear localStorage and cookies via your browser settings at any time. Clearing uc-theme will reset your display preference to the system default.
